The Xperia Z2 was Sony’s flagship smartphone released in back in April. But less than six months after that, the Japanese device maker decided to launch a sequel in the form of the Sony Xperia Z3.
Both devices have virtually the same 20.7-megapixel main camera and 2.2-megapixel front shooter. In fact, they have almost the same specs with the main difference lying in the quad-core 2.5GHz Krait 400 CPU powering the Xperia Z3; a slight improvement on Z2’s Krait 400 humming at 2.3GHz.
Current flagship or not, the Xperia Z2 is still an extremely capable handset. On the photography front, it probably has the one of the most powerful cameras around. Sony detailed the device’s camera features in this page, but what we’re going to give you are the tips on how to use those. Users have shared what they like the most about the Z2’s camera in this forum thread and folks from Phone Arena also listed their own tips. We’ve taken the best out of those and compiled the followingXperia Z2 camera tips and tricks.
Use Timeshift Burst to take a photo of moving subjects
Snapping photos of subjects that could disappear or change at any moment (i.e. sports activity, wildlife), may be extremely challenging. Thankfully, the Xperia Z2 has a Timeshift Burst mode that can capture about 30 images before and after you press the shutter button. However, you can use it if you enable it from the settings, which is somewhat counterintuitive as it may take a few more seconds to do so. If you want this feature to be available at all times, head to the camera settings and enable the “burst with Long Press” option.
Activate HDR mode to capture more details
Some phone cameras have limited exposure range; details may be lost in the brightest or darkest parts of a photo. The Xperia Z2 has an excellent HDR mode that can capture a wider range of light by combining multiple photos taken at different exposure settings. You can activate it by tapping on the Mode button and choosing HDR. The only catch is that you’ll need to hold the device steady as the HDR mode take a little more time to snap photo in multiple exposures.
Use the physical camera button to quickly launch the camera.
Few smartphone models these days have a dedicated camera shutter button. The Xperia Z2 is blessed with it and apparently, snapping photos is not its only trick. You can configure it to launch the camera even when the phone is locked or in stand-by. You can couple this feature with the Timeshift Burst mode we mentioned above for catching rare moments as they happen.
Try the Z2’s Clear Zoom feature
When you use digital zoom on other handsets’ camera, it will only stretch the image and produce photos with poorer image quality. The only workaround in those cases is to get closer to your subject physically. With Xperia Z2’s Clear Zoom feature, you can magnify the image up to three times without having a significant drop in pixel quality. It will only work when you set the camera in Superior Auto mode.
