2. Promote new beginnings. Whether with a simple calendar for customers or a more elaborate “welcome back” gift for employees, getting clients to think about ways to promote an optimistic message and a fresh start in 2011 can inspire sales.
3. Add value to an item. Look for ways to tie in a discount or offer that can bring a customer back later in the year. Tom Kaufman, president of Kaufman Promo (asi/239350), is working with a convenience-store client to include a coupon in each of the hot-drink mugs it sells to customers in the early months of the year.
4. Play the long game. Developing awards that can be collected from one year to the next is a great way to ensure the same client returns over time. “We try to emphasize continuity programs,” says Kami Arnold, manager of Arnolds for Awards (asi/124160). “It can be bookmarks, ornaments or a series of porcelain plates, but make it a set.”
5. Let the cold weather get customers (re)thinking. Sometimes the freeze of the winter can get customers to order things they otherwise wouldn’t. “You may have a difficult time selling caps to some customers during the year, but the same people who won’t buy caps from you will buy stocking caps and mufflers in the winter,” says Philip Davis, president of Your Extra Specialties (asi/365375). He has found that the winter gives him an opening to sell smaller apparel items to these customers throughout the year.

Looking to save money? What small business isn’t? Here are some creative ways to trim your expenses today.
Ask for a discount. Whether it’s your Internet provider or your credit card vendor, most vendors have quantity discounts for good customers. Even if they don’t, it pays to ask. If you’ve been a loyal customer, call your vendors and simply ask them what they can do to cut your bill. Some vendors are authorized to offer up on-the-spot discounts depending on the situation.
Cut phone costs. If you use your cellphone more than your landline, consider getting rid of the landline and having all calls forwarded to your cellphone. Take advantage of Skype, a software program that allows you to make phone calls via the Internet. The basic service is free and can be used for local, long distance and international calls which will help to cut your phone bill. Skype is also hands-free, so you can type notes on your computer and chat at the same time. Also, configure your office computers to send and receive faxes.
Use virtual samples. While many distributors are accustomed to using samples as a way to appeal to buyers and prospects, they’re not always necessary to make a sale. A great way to cut costs is to start using virtual samples, which show customers exactly what the product will look like with their logo on it.
Hire interns. For a small business, this is an ideal way to get low-cost, yet highly motivated workers. Contact your local schools and universities to get in touch with program coordinators. Just make sure you offer meaningful work that will be helpful to college students. Give the job an appealing title (like “customer service coordinator”) to attract potential candidates.
Go Green. Is your office as environmentally friendly as it could be? By adopting eco-friendly measures, like installing energy-saving blubs and putting timers on your lights and thermostats, you can save money while also doing your part to help the environment.
Eliminate memberships. When’s the last time you attended your local networking club? If you’re paying fees to organizations that you’re just not involved in, withdraw your membership. Consider expanding your virtual networking efforts instead. For example, you might increase your LinkedIn contacts and begin posting case studies and articles that might interest your contacts.
Pay down/off credit cards. Do what you can to pay off high-interest credit cards and avoid making new purchases if you can’t pay cash. Don’t cancel your cards—they help build credit. Just don’t use them.
Go paperless. Stop printing out everything. Aim toward a paperless office, and do as much as you can (including paying your bills) online.

When you look at your phone, you probably think about spending money rather than making it. Your handset almost certainly cost you a pretty penny, be it in up-front costs or in the form of an on-going contract. There are also the apps you purchase to consider, but and there's no reason that it shouldn't earn you a little money and pay its way. Google Opinion Rewards
It perhaps comes as little surprise that Google has an app of its own that you can use to make money. With Google Opinion Rewards you earn Google Play credit by completing surveys. You'll receive a notification whenever a new survey is available, and you just need to spend a few moments answering a series of questions – there's nothing too taxing! Once completed, survey earn you credit that can be used in Goole Play to buy apps, music and other things. It's worth noting that many of the surveys have a deadline for completion, so make sure you don’t wait too long to complete them.
MintCoins
Rather than store credit, MintCoins gives you the opportunity to earn yourself cold, hard cash. It's an app that helps you to earn money in a number of ways. You can gain virtual coins by downloading free apps, by watching videos, registering with websites, and referring your friends to do the same. There are also surveys to complete, and as soon as your balance hits $1, you're free to withdraw your earnings to a PayPal account – or you can wait and let it build up for longer if you like.
iPoll
Google Opinion Rewards is not the only survey-based app that can be used to pull in a little cash. iPoll works in a very similar way providing you with a series of "missions" to complete. In addition to traditional surveys, you may also be asked to submit photos or even upload an audio or video recording. As in other apps you can pull the money into a PayPal account, but your can also add it to your Amazon or iTunes account if you prefer.

The name says it all here – this is an app designed to help you to earn money. If you try out the other apps mentioned here, this one might look familiar. It is all but identical to MintCoins, but you might find that the number of offers available is slightly more limited due to your location. From installing apps to watching videos, earning money really takes very little work and your rewards can be quickly transferred to a PayPal account.
Rewardable
Rewardable has a US leaning to it, but not all of the tasks you are invited to complete are reliant on being in the US. These are described as "virtual tasks" and can be completed by anyone – so during the signup process you could simply enter a pretend zip code to get started. Rewards vary quite a lot, but are generally quite high, and your earnings can be withdrawn to PayPal easily. Should you find yourself in the States, there are in-store, location-specific tasks to carry out as well.
AppCasher
If getting paid to test out apps seems like a great way to spend your time, AppCasher will be right up your street. You can earn credits for installing and launching apps, and these credits can then be converted into gift cards that you can use to buy things from Amazon or iTunes, or you can opt to have cash transferred to your PayPal account instead. You can also refer your friends to the app, and providing they use your special code, you'll earn extra credit for each person who signs up.
