How to set up and use WhatsApp on your Lumia 530

The Lumia 530 is a great communication tool straight out of the box, but thanks to access to the Windows Phone Store, you can also download everyone’s favourite cross-platform messaging app – WhatsApp. Here’s how to set up and use WhatsApp on your Lumia 530.
With a bright 4-inch 854 x 480 display, a 1.2GHz quad-core Qualcomm CPU and a 5-Megapixel camera, the Nokia Lumia 530 is all the smartphone you need for a bargain price.
Download WhatsApp, and you’ll be able to send advanced chats to all of your friends and family, regardless of which smartphone operating system they use.
Here’s our advice on setting up and using WhatsApp on your Nokia Lumia 530.
WhatsApp for Windows Phone: Installation
First things first, you can install WhatsApp on your Nokia Lumia 530 from here. Alternatively, just search for it in the Windows Phone Store on your handsets. Don’t worry – it’s free!
When asked, click yes to allow WhatsApp to access your location.
WhatsApp for Windows Phone: Initial set-up
Upon opening up WhatsApp on your Nokia Lumia 530, click ‘agree and continue’ to the terms and conditions. Then, check that your country is correct. The international dialling code should also be filled in for you (it’s +44 for the UK). All you need to do here is fill in your mobile number, knocking off the ‘0’ from the beginning.
Now hit the forward button.
WhatsApp for Windows Phone: Verification
WhatsApp will now want to send you a verification SMS, so check that the number is correct and hit continue. When you receive the number as a text message, you can do one of two things. Either memorise the six-digit number from the notification and type it into the field, or go into the message and tap the link at the bottom.
WhatsApp for Windows Phone: Enter profile
Now you need to set up your profile, which is how your contacts will see you. Tap on the picture field, and you’ll be able to set a picture of yourself (or whatever you want). You can either take a selfie then and there, or take a picture from an existing album stored on your device.
Back in the Profile info screen, you also need to add a name. This will be the name you’re know as in WhatsApp. Top tip: tap the little smiley button to add an emoticon to your name.
Now hit the forward button twice. You’ll find that WhatsApp has added all of your contacts using WhatsApp to your WhatsApp account
WhatsApp for Windows Phone: How to use
From the Chats field, click on the + button to start a new one-to-one chat. From here it’s a simple matter of typing in a message, just like an SMS. You can also attach pictures, contacts, location info, videos, or video messages from here.
You can also start group messages with the little group icon alongside the + button, setting up a group photo and subject to boot.

Nokia Lumia 530: Battery Saver
As with all other Windows Phone 8.1 devices, the Nokia Lumia 530 comes with a Battery Saver function. This kicks in when you find yourself running out of power, leaving only the basic functions operating in the background.
Check out Battery Saver in the Apps list. You can even pin it to your Start screen so you can see at a glance how much battery power you have left.
Nokia Lumia 530: Background tasks
Windows Phone 8.1 enables recently used apps to keep running in the background, which is great for granting quick multitasking access. However, you can free up extra memory and battery capacity by closing down some of these unneeded background apps.
To do so, just hold the Back key (the left-hand button below the Lumia screen) and tap the ‘X’ mark in the right-hand corner of any open apps you’d like to close.
Nokia Lumia 530: Email synchronisation
The Nokia Lumia 530 is great at pulling in new email as and when you receive it, but that does tend to take up power. If you don’t need your emails pulling in quite so frequently, why not lessen the frequency and save the juice?
Simply go to Settings>Email+Accounts and select your email account. Next, you will find an option labelled Download New Content, which you can tweak to extend the amount of time between email downloads.
Nokia Lumia 530: Location Services
Your Lumia 530 keeps a track of where you are at all times, and even checks in for you. To help preserve battery life when out and about. You can keep location services switched on, but turn off check-in services to save power. Just go to the start screen, swipe left, and tap Settings>Applications>People and switch the Use My Location tab to Off.

The Lumia 530 is one well-connected phone, but connections require power. If you don’t need Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, or NFC, why not deactivate them? You’ll be surprised how much juice you can save in this way.

How to set up email on Nokia Lumia 530 with Windows Phone 8.1
The Nokia Lumia 530 is the entry-level budget smartphone in the Windows Phone 8.1 family. With its low price for many people it is their first smartphone offering everything from social media access to email and messaging. Setting up your email account is incredibly easy but if you’re new to Windows Phone 8.1 there are a few things you’ll need to know. Find out how to set up email on your Nokia Lumia 530 – it’s easier than you think.
The death of email has been greatly exaggerated in the UK press of late, with students in particular stating they’d rather use social media networks for being contacted and kept informed. However, for most of us email and its private nature remains one of those features we’ve come to take as a natural part of our daily lives.
Setting it up on your Nokia Lumia 530 is one of the first tasks you’ll want to do and it’s incredibly easy. It doesn’t matter if you have an Outlook, Google, Yahoo, or some other email account, it all follows a similar pattern.
How to set up email on Nokia Lumia 530
Swipe down on the screen and the Action Centre will open. Tap on the All settings icon and choose Email+Accounts from the list. You will then see a full list of the default accounts that you can add to your Nokia Lumia 530 – everything from Outlook and Hotmail, through to third-party clients such as Yahoo and Google Mail.
All you need do is tap the option you’d like to add and follow the onscreen instructions. Windows Phone 8.1 takes the stress and hassle out of having to set up an account as all you’ll need to do with most email accounts is add your email name and the password, the software will do the rest.
Once you’ve entered your details all you need do is tap the ‘Sign In’ button at the bottom of the screen and Windows Phone will complete your email setup.
You’ll find your email account is added as a Live Tile to the Start screen of your Nokia Lumia 530. However, it will use the generic account name, such as Google. If you want to make it a little more personal, open the app, choose Settings>Sync Settings and change the Account Name.
Once done tap the tick on the bottom of the screen and you’ll see the Live Tile now has a new name on the Start screen.
The great thing about Windows Phone 8.1 is, once you’ve set up email is that you’ll be able to see all your messages at a glance using the Notifications options in the new Action Centre. To do this just swipe down from the top of the screen and the centre will open and you’ll see all your messages, regardless of how many email accounts you have set up.
