Google's Android 5.0 update is collectively considered the biggest update yet of the mobile OS series. Although some devices are yet to receive the firmware, it would do well for users to know and understand how to enable its top security features. Likewise, a few tips and tricks on the upcoming Android 5.1 should also be helpful.
The Android 5.0 has focused on the privacy and security of users although it comes with a price: a series of performance grievances. Google took notice of this thus the latest Android Lollipop update version came without the default device encryption. This allowed the company to boost the speed performance of devices including tablets that are based on the Android 5.x series already.
Although the decision may be fine with users not very concerned about their user data through 128-bit AES encryption, other Android users can do well knowing how to enable security features on their devices. Before trying out these enabling procedures, it is best for users to find a secure place. Preferably, enabling security measures on smartphone should be done at home or where as power source is available.
First thing to do is to enable the pattern lock, PIN or lock password of the device. To do this, go to Settings > Security. Choose Encrypt phone/tablet option under the Security menu. Wait for the hour-long encryption process and device reboot before entering the lock code. As for the Android 5.1 update, curious users may find the following interesting tidbits:
1. They can access the quick settings drawer from the lock screen.
2. The Quick Settings part is customizable.
3. Device Protection feature can be added.
4. Updated devices can make calls with HD audio.
5. Priority Mode can be turned on until the alarm goes off.
As for the Android 5.1 rollout to other devices, users should wait for official announcements from their carriers. Samsung has not confirmed any builds for the latest Android firmware yet.
