1.Turn it off and on: On your Apple iPhone, there is a power switch. On your Apple Watch, there is not a power switch. But press and hold the side button, or friends button, below the digital crown and you’ll get three options: Power off; Power Reserve (turns off most Watch functions but lets you still tell the time when your battery is running low); and Lock Device.
2.Setting your calorie burn: Most activity trackers ask you to set a step count you think you can achieve. The Apple Watch tracks your movement in terms of a calorie burn amount. The first time you set up the Apple Watch, it will set the calorie burn based on your age, gender, height and weight. If you find you’re meeting your goal easily, or not meeting it at all, you can reset the benchmark. Tap on the activity app on your Watch to go to the Move circle and then force tap to change the setting.
3. Track your fitness: Go to the Watch app on your iPhone to access Activity app settings. You can select to get a weekly summary of how you've met your fitness goals. You can also turn on or off stand reminders and progress updates.
4. Start now: If you’re heading out for a run, walk or cycle, the exercise app on the Watch will count down three seconds to let you know when to begin. If you don’t want to wait three seconds, tap the Watch again to start your activity immediately.
5. Scroll to open: If you find the app screen a little difficult to navigate, you don’t have to tap an app to open it. Scrolling the Digital Crown opens whatever app you have in the middle of the screen at that time. So, slide your apps around until the one you want is in the centre, then scroll the Digital Crown.
6. Remote control: The Watch doesn’t have a camera but it does work as a handy remote for your iPhone camera. Tap on the camera icon on the Watch and the camera app opens on your iPhone. Look at your Watch and tap on a focal point for your image. You have a choice of hitting a button to take a photograph instantly or hitting the 3S button for a three-second countdown to your camera taking a burst of 10 images.
7. Swipe up to Glance: Glances, which you access by swiping up from the bottom of the screen, are a quick way to see information. You can manage what information you have available at a glance by going to Glances in the Watch app on you iPhone. You can change the order of the information or delete item from Glances. Decide what is most important to you and make that the first Glance you come to.
8. In and Out: One of the strengths of the Watch is managing your inbox. Go to the Mail app on your phone to see your inbox. Swipe to the left and you can delete a message or flag it. If you feel the tap on your wrist of an incoming email, lifting your wrist first shows you the sender’s identity and then opens the email. Scroll to the bottom of the mail to flag or delete the message.
9. Zoom power: Most people who use an Apple Watch will tell you that sometimes, when trying to tap on one of the small app buttons, you hit the wrong icon. If you find the buttons too small, you can go to General settings and then Accessibility in the Watch app of the phone to set zoom settings. Try a 1.5 zoom as a starting point. To access the zoom, hit the Digital Crown three times. Hit it three times again to return to normal view.
10. Voice over: You probably don’t want your Apple Watch to read aloud everything on your screen but there are times when that could be very handy. On the Watch app of the phone, go to General and accessibility to access Voiceover. You can control speaking volume and rate. It could be handy when you’re in the car, having the Watch read out incoming messages.
11. Take a memo: There is no native Apple app for using the Watch to record voice memos. Third party apps are likely to fill that need. But you can also find a workaround by adding yourself as one of your “friends” in your friends wheel. Then go to messages, tap on your name and send yourself a voice message. You will find it as an audio clip in the messages app of your iPhone, iMac or iPad.
12. Phone a friend: You can answer a phone on your wrist, using the Watch’s speaker and microphone. But there are a lot of times you don’t want to speak to your hand. You can swipe up from bottom to answer the call on your phone or send a message to the caller.
13. Notifications you want: You might be happy with every app on your iPhone giving notifications but you will want to keep your wrist buzzes to the important items. Go to Notifications in the Watch app on your phone to select which apps can send notifications to your wrist.
14. Quick control: The first field in Glances has a couple of very handy features. You can mute sound on notifications on your Watch, which is handy if you’re in a meeting. If you can’t find where you put your phone around the house, just a tap on the Watch makes the iPhone emit an alarm.
15. Untethered: The Watch works best when it’s connected to your iPhone but it doesn’t have to be connected to work. If you don’t want to take your iPhone running, you can put up to 2GB of music on your Watch and use Bluetooth headphones to listen.
16. Smiley face: There is a good and bad side to using emoji on the Watch. The Watch has three series of animated emojis: smiling faces, hearts and hand gestures. But if you swipe across once more you get access to the standard emoji. If you tap on one, it gets sent right away rather than letting you create a string of emojis for a message.
17. Fired up: Not happy? Force tap on the animated smiley face to turn the face red. Just the thing if you’re angry or embarrassed.
18. Catch a flight: You can access your Passbook on the Watch even if the phone is turned off. That will be very handy when boarding a flight, if you plan to use your Watch as a boarding pass. It is best to have a plan B, such as a printed boarding pass or your iPhone handy, because we’ve had mixed results using the Watch to board planes. Boarding a Virgin flight in Brisbane, it went off without a hitch. Boarding a Qantas flight in Sydney, however, on the gate we tried it was impossible to fit an arm with the Watch on it under the scanner.
19. On the pulse: The Watch records your heart rate every 10 minutes. But if you want to see your heart rate right now, just swipe through to heart rate in Glances.
20. Sounds of silence: If you’re in a theatre or other quiet place and suddenly a call arrives reminding you that you forgot to mute your Watch, just put your hand over the watch to silence it.
21. Toggle: Notifications are great but they can interrupt you while you’re doing something with your Watch. Just double click the Digital Crown to go back to the app you were in.
22. Force tap: Force tap, or tapping the screen harder, typically takes you into a settings mode for an app. In the Music app, it opens up a menu that lets you do a range of things such as shuffle music play or connect to a device through Airplay. In Mail, force tap on a message brings up an option to flag, delete or mark as unread. In the Activity app, force tap lets you change your calorie burn goal.
23. App control: Using the Watch app on your phone, you can choose to set automatic downloads on. If it is set to on, when the apps you use on you iPhone are upgraded to include a Watch app, that new app will also appear on your Watch.
24. You are here: Trying to meet up with a friend? In the Messages app, a force tap on a message lets you send your location straight to that person.
25. Clear the way: A red dot at the top of your watch face indicates there are notifications available which you can see by swiping down. You can swipe individual notifications from the right to clear them, or force tap on notifications to clear the list of them all at once.
26. Wiggle it: Don’t like the layout of your app screen on your Watch? You can use the Watch app on your phone to move or delete apps or, just as with your iPhone, hold your finger on an app icon to make them wiggle. You can then move the icons around or delete unwanted icons.
27. Stay in touch: Once you set up your iPhone and Watch they automatically reconnect when they are within range. But if for some reason they are not connected, just turn plane mode on and off on your phone to get them connected again.
