10 things you should definitely know about WhatsApp

WHATSAPP is the world's most popular messaging app, but it almost failed before it even started.
Having been created by two ex Yahoo! employees in 2009, WhatsApp has gone on to become one of the world's most popular smartphone apps.
The messaging service now has 700million users sending over 30billion messages every day.
But the early days of WhatsApp were not so prosperous, with only a handful of users and an app that constantly crashed, the team almost gave up on the idea.
Luckily, they carried on developing the app and with the bugs ironed out and users growing by the day the team at WhatsApp hit gold.
So if you're one of the millions of users here's ten things you didn't know about the famous app.
1. WhatsApp was created in 2009 by Brian Acton and Jan Koum. Having left Yahoo! they applied for positions at Facebook but were turned down.
2. Incredibly, in 2014 Facebook went on to purchase WhatsApp for a staggering sum of $19billion.
3. The company has just 55 staff including 32 engineers who are responsible for 22million users each.
4. Since its launch WhatsApp hasn't spent a penny on marketing and has no PR team. Its success is all down to its users spreading the word.
5. In one day WhatsApp processes 4 times as many messages as there are humans on planet Earth.

6. Jan Koum, keeps a note from co-founder Brian Acton taped to his desk that reads “No Ads! No Games! No Gimmicks!" This helps to keep them focused on building a pure messaging experience.
7. The blue tick outcry! Users complained after WhatsApp added the double blue tick, which shows if your message have been read. Android users can switch this off but Apple fans are stuck with it. And if you've ever wondered what the ticks mean here's a quick guide.

Double grey tick - message arrived
Double blue tick - message read

8. WhatsApp is now available on your computer. The web browser mirrors conversations and messages from your mobile device.
9. Rumours are rife that WhatsApp will soon add voice calls to its service. Some users have already reported seeing the feature but there's no word from the messaging service as to when it will appear.
10. Facebook won't change WhatsApp. In a recent blog post the WhatsApp team made it clear that joining with the social media site wouldn't affect users.
“If partnering with Facebook meant that we had to change our values, we wouldn’t have done it.”

The post reads: 'If partnering with Facebook meant that we had to change our values, we wouldn’t have done it. Instead, we are forming a partnership that would allow us to continue operating independently and autonomously. Our fundamental values and beliefs will not change.
'Our principles will not change.
'Everything that has madeWhatsApp the leader in personal messaging will still be in place.
'Make no mistake: our future partnership with Facebook will not compromise the vision that brought us to this point.
'Our focus remains on delivering the promise of WhatsApp far and wide, so that people around the world have the freedom to speak their mind without fear.'
