Create Shortcuts For Important Contacts
On Android, you can create a shortcut to your favourite contact on Whatsapp right on your homescreens to speed up your conversations.
Simply long press on the desired contact or group and tap on “Add Conversation Shortcut” on the menu that pops up. The shortcut to that chat will be created on your homescreen.
Hide “Last Seen” Timestamp
Whatsapp displays a “last seen” timestamp by default that tells other users the time when you were last online on Whatsapp. You may wish to disable the same for privacy reasons. The feature can be disabled on Android as well as iOS.
On Android, go to Settings > Account > Privacy and here you can set the “Last Seen” to “Nobody”, “Everyone” or “My Friends”.
On iOS, go to Settings > Chat Settings > Advanced and here you can set “Last Seen” Timestamp to Off.
Backup WhatsApp Chats
The backup of your conversations is automatically done by Whatsapp. But, you can also do the same manually. This option makes a backup of only the chats and not the media.
On Android, go to Settings > Chat settings and select “Backup conversations”.
On iOS, Settings > Chat Settings > Chat Backup, and select “Back Up Now”.
Restore The Chats
Chats from Whatsapp can’t be restored directly. To restore a backup, Whatsapp needs to be uninstalled and reinstalled. Once you relaunch Whatsapp after reinstalling, it will prompt you to restore the most recent backup. Here, you can follow the procedure to restore the chats.
Change The Whatsapp Phone Number
If you don’t want to remove Whatsapp and reinstall it if you have changed the phone number but using the same phone, Whatsapp lets you migrate your account to another phone number including the chat history, groups and other data.
To do so, go to Settings > Account > Change number. Here, you have to enter the old number and the new number in the respective fields. Once you press “Done”, you are required to verify the new phone number and it’s done.
Make WhatsApp Images Not To Appear In the Gallery Or Camera Roll
If getting the Whatsapp images in your camera roll or the gallery bothers you, you can disable this feature on Android as well as on iOS.
On iOS, go to Settings > Privacy > Photos and turn WhatsApp off.
On Android, a .nomedia file needs to be created in the images or video directories of Whatsapp using a file explorer for android. Open the images or video folder and create a new file named .nomedia. to disable the Gallery from scanning that folder.
Control WhatsApp Auto-image Download
Recently, Whatsapp has added an option in the settings to stop the downloading of Whatsapp videos, images and audio files automatically.
To control the automatic downloading of the media files, go to Settings > Chat Settings > Media auto-download and select the option that suits you, from “When using mobile data”, “On Wifi”, “When connected” and “When Roaming”.
