You’re one of the Nexus owners and you’re about to manually update your device toAndroid 5.0 Lollipop, there are two methods for you to do it. If the bootloader isn’t unlocked and you want to flash the factory image, you’ll need to do a factory reset. However, the other method is to install the actual OTA update and we’ll teach you how to succeed.
To run a custom recovery, you’ll need to download the right Zip file from the list we’ll share below, and then flash it. Follow our instructions if you’re running stock and in case you haven’t downloaded and installed the Android SDK, do it! Instead, you can get the Minimal ADB and Fastboot, and this way you’ll have all the files you need.
Next, after downloading the right Zip file, place it in the folder with the ADB and Fastboot, but if you opted for the full SDK, you’ll find it in this folder: the C:\program files (x86)\android\android-sdk\platform-tools.
You’ll have an entire list of zip files corresponding with your device, and if you don’t know if your device is on the list, go to Settings > About Phone > About Phone > Build Number. The Build Number will match the “From” from this list:
  • Nexus 4 (occam): From KTU84P to LRX21T
  • Nexus 5 (hammerhead): From KTU84P to LRX21O and From KTU84Q to LRX21O
  • Nexus 7 (2013) WiFi (razor): From KTU84P to LRX21P and From KTU84P to Unknown (Coming Soon); (nakasi): From KTU84P to LRX21P and From KTU84P to Unknown (Coming Soon)
  • Nexus 9 (volantis): From LRX21L to LRX21Q; From LRX21L to LRX21R and From LRX21Q to LRX21R
  • Nexus 10 (mantaray): From KTU84P to LRX21P
Next, enable the USB debugging, but if you don’t see the Developer Options in the Settings, go to About Phone to find the Build Number and tap it seven times until the Developer Options will appear. There’s a Black key you’ll have to tap, to see the Developer Options and check to enable USB Debugging.
You need to have the right drivers installed on your device, then connect it to the USB port of your laptop or desktop and flash the Zip files you’ve just downloaded.
And this is how you can install the OTA update:
In Windows, open the Command Prompt, go to the folder containing ADB and Fastboot or where you installed the full SDK (C:\program files (x86)\android\android-sdk\platform-tools folder) and type cd\program files (x86)\android\android-sdk\platform-tools.
While the device is connected to your laptop and the USB Debugging is enabled, start it in fastboot mode by typing adb reboot bootloader or by turning off the Nexus phone/tablet and turning it back on and holding a combinations of keys such as Volume Up + Volume Down + Power
You’ll notice the fastboot menu and the “Start” somewhere in the top right. Them, you’ll have to press “Volume Up” until it becomes “Recovery” and you’ll press “Power” to select it.
Then, you’ll notice the Android icon containing a red exclamation point. Just hold “Volume Up” and “Power” button and you’ll see a new menu. To apply update from adb, press the “Power” button.
Go to the CMD window and type: adb sideload [the full name of the file].zip, the the update will be installed. Just reboot your device enjoy using the new update.
In case you encounter problems with your laptop not recognizing the Nexus device, this means that you haven’t installed the correct drivers. Get the Google USB Drivers as fast as possible.
