Whether you’re an iOS, Android, Windows Phone or Blackberry user and have WhatsApp installed on your device, you’re probably wondering if your privacy is safe now that Facebook acquired WhatsApp.
In the application, the full Privacy Notice will e found somewhere at the bottom of the Help/FAQ section. The service will collect the phone number and push name (User Provided Information) plus the billing address once you exceed one year of WhatsApp use. This information isn’t sold to anyone, but it’s shared with third-parties, to improve this service.
When you’re visiting Whatsapp’s page, the site uses persistent and session cookies, which will make it load faster in the future, but it collects information such as your IP address or page requests, and deletes the data once you close your browser.
Don’t worry, WhatsApp doesn’t collect every information about you. As you can see in the Privacy Notice, you’re assured that your contact names and numbers synced on your phone won’t be sent to their servers. Unlike Facebook, WhatsApp doesn’t collect location-based service data, but the company can’t guarantee you that the data sent through this application are safe. In case you’re hacked, all your messages will be exposed. But, if the servers are hacked, you’ll receive a notice through the app, or they’ll post it on their website.
Many are wondering if WhatsApp collects messages. Theoretically, they don’t or normally, they don’t. All the messages are kept, stored for a period of time – 30 days, and if they’re not delivered, when the time expires, they’re automatically deleted. If they’re delivered, they’ll still go through WhatsApp’s servers, but without being stored.
For your own peace of mind, you’d better delete your chat history, but if you delete important messages, you can retrieve them. This doesn’t mean that the servers STORE your messages – they’re kept somewhere in your phone’s internal memory. The iOS users have the possibility to store information in the iCloud, but with the big celebrity nude photo scandal that happened a while ago due to a security breach, it’s kind of hard to trust their servers.
According to WhatsApp’s Privacy Notice, the files you send via this service are retained even after they’re delivered, but only for a short period of time. This raises questions and the users are concerned that their information is collected and used later by bad intended people. However, you can regain control by using a privacy check-up tool.
If you don’t want to let your contacts known when you were last seen, there’s a way to hide from everybody. You’ll have the solution here: Settings > Account > Privacy.
If you have an iPhone, maybe you’ll want to disable iCloud back-up, go to Settings >Chat Settings > Chat Backup > Auto Backup.
But, let’s not panic, though, and let Zuckerberg and its team take care of the privacy problem. The collaboration between Facebook and WhatsApp is fruitful so far and no incidents occurred so far, which is a good thing. A dose of suspicion is welcomed though and it’s better to be precocious than careless.
